{"id":1024,"date":"2023-06-20T22:44:14","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T22:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ceq.local\/sobre-o-circulo\/"},"modified":"2025-02-10T12:46:53","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T12:46:53","slug":"about-the-circle","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/circuloecadequeiroz.pt\/en\/about-the-circle\/","title":{"rendered":"About the Circle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-secondary-color has-text-color\"><em>\u201cArt is a summary of nature made by imagination\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<pre id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The C\u00edrculo E\u00e7a de Queiroz is an intellectual and social association founded in 1940 by the initiative of Ant\u00f3nio Ferro (with the name of the patron suggested by Ant\u00f3nio Lopes Ribeiro), with the aim of fostering good relations among its members and guests, as well as promoting a love for literature and the arts through conferences, exhibitions, and concerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its foundation, despite many challenges, the C\u00edrculo has sought to contribute to the intellectual and social elevation of Portuguese life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great figures of Portuguese and international culture have passed through the C\u00edrculo as guests or lecturers. Its first honorary member was Maurice Maeterlinck, Nobel Prize winner in Literature. Other distinguished visitors include T.S. Eliot, also a Nobel Prize winner in Literature, as well as Graham Greene and Gabriel Marcel. In 1942, Gregorio Mara\u00f1\u00f3n gave a lecture at this club, which was later published. Among Brazilian writers, notable figures such as Gustavo Barroso, Pl\u00ednio Salgado, Lu\u00eds Viana Filho, Herberto Sales, Josu\u00e9 Montello, and Ant\u00f3nio Carlos Villa\u00e7a have participated. The last three authors recorded their experiences at the C\u00edrculo in their memoirs. Ortega y Gasset and Eug\u00e9nio Montes also contributed to the cultural prestige of the C\u00edrculo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 1946, the C\u00edrculo organized a series of conferences to mark the centenary of E\u00e7a de Queiroz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, the Board worked to restore the C\u00edrculo E\u00e7a de Queiroz to the spirit of its founder through the cultural initiative \u201cSer\u00f5es Queirosianos.\u201d Of the more than 50 lectures given during this period, the cycle dedicated to the &#8220;Vencidos da Vida&#8221; stands out, later compiled into a book in 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1994, the C\u00edrculo welcomed as lecturers Prof. Fraga Iribarne, President of the Government of Galicia, and Prof. Miguel Reale, President of the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 1990s, another cultural initiative was the introduction of \u201cweekly teas,\u201d followed by debates on a wide range of topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some time, the C\u00edrculo E\u00e7a de Queiroz also collaborated with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, which performed a monthly recital at the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout its more than 70 years of existence, this association has maintained exchanges with various public and private entities, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Historical Society for the Independence of Portugal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luso-Brazilian Institute of Philosophy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academy of History<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academy of Sciences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brazilian Academy of Philosophy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gr\u00e9mio Liter\u00e1rio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National Center for Culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Group of Friends of Lisbon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>E\u00e7a de Queiroz Foundation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IADE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embassies of Spain, Brazil, Israel, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National Commission for the E\u00e7a de Queiroz Centenary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Several similar clubs across Europe and Brazil have preferential relations with the C\u00edrculo E\u00e7a de Queiroz, particularly in the exchange of services for their members. Among them are \u201cLe Cercle de l\u2019Union Interalli\u00e9e\u201d (Paris); the \u201cSavile Club,\u201d the \u201cNational Liberal Club,\u201d the \u201cCity University Club,\u201d and the \u201cEccentric Club\u201d (London); the \u201cSociet\u00e0 del Giardino\u201d (Milan); the Real Gran Pe\u00f1a (Madrid); the \u201cSociedad Bilbaina\u201d (Navarra); the \u201cCercle de Lorraine\u201d (Brussels); the \u201cGr\u00eamio Luso-Brasileiro\u201d (S\u00e3o Paulo); and the Royal Canadian Military Institute, Toronto \u2013 Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C\u00edrculo E\u00e7a de Queiroz is funded by member contributions and revenue from various activities. It has occasionally received financial support from the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Secretary of State for Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This association is committed to continuing its mission through conferences, concerts, and exhibitions, following an annually planned cultural program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C\u00edrculo E\u00e7a de Queiroz has a restricted number of 202 members in Category A. This number was inspired by an imaginary mansion on the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, where one of the fictional characters created by Portuguese writer E\u00e7a de Queiroz, Jacinto, lived in the 19th century in Paris. Over time, the club has admitted a few members exceeding the 202 limit, who enjoy all social rights except voting.
