Círculo Eça de Queiroz kicked off its cultural calendar with a guided tour of the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC) in Chiado. The event, organized by the Circle’s Cultural Council, was attended by the museum’s director, Emília Ferreira, who led members and guests through the museum’s collection of Portuguese contemporary art.
During the visit, participants explored the museum’s permanent exhibition as well as two temporary exhibitions currently on display at MNAC. “It was an experience that allowed us to revisit key moments in Portuguese art, understanding its evolution and impact on the country’s cultural identity,” said António Ayres Gonçalves, President of the Cultural Council of the Círculo Eça de Queiroz.
Founded on May 26, 1911, MNAC emerged from the split of the former National Museum of Fine Arts and has played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Portuguese contemporary art. Its history includes significant moments such as its reconstruction after the 1988 fire and the expansion of its exhibition space in 2015, which led to the creation of the Capelo Wing. Under the direction of Emília Ferreira since 2017, the museum has strengthened its mission of promoting and valuing 19th-century and modernist art, establishing national and international partnerships.
“We believe that culture should be experienced and shared, and events like this are essential for fostering critical thinking and expanding our members’ knowledge,” stated António Ayres Gonçalves. With a diverse program planned for the coming months, the Círculo Eça de Queiroz reaffirms its mission of promoting knowledge and culture, remaining faithful to the legacy of its patron and the appreciation of the arts and literature in Portugal.
