Círculo Eça de Queiroz joins in mourning the passing of Pope Francis

The Círculo Eça de Queiroz joins the Catholic Church in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, an essential figure in the religious and moral life of our time. His death represents a profound loss for millions of faithful around the world and for all those who recognized in his witness a call to human dignity, justice, and fraternity.

“Pope Francis will be remembered for a pontificate marked by the simplicity of his gestures and the strength of his pastoral message,” said António Martins da Costa, president of the Círculo Eça de Queiroz. “His commitment to an open Church, close to the poor and centered on service, translated into a deeply human leadership, guided by listening and welcoming. A defender of interreligious dialogue and peace, Pope Francis always sought an inclusive Church, ‘at the service of all, all, all,’ as he repeatedly affirmed.”

The Círculo Eça de Queiroz highlights, among the significant moments of his pontificate, his visit to Lisbon for the 2023 World Youth Day. This event, which the CEQ was willing to support, was a moment of encounter among cultures, generations, and expressions of faith, inspiring a renewed commitment to the Gospel values of solidarity and hope.

According to the president of the Círculo Eça de Queiroz, “Pope Francis leaves us a spiritual and human legacy of immense significance. With him, we learned that the Church’s mission is fulfilled through closeness, attentive listening, and the courage to open paths of peace in a world so often divided.” The Círculo Eça de Queiroz expresses its solidarity with the Church and with all those across the world who find in Pope Francis’ example a reference of authenticity, compassion, and commitment to the common good.
