The Círculo Eça de Queiroz Christmas Dinner gathered members and guests for one of the institution’s most emblematic moments, featuring a special recital by Polish soprano Patrycja Gabrel. Accompanied on piano by Nuno Margarido Lopes, the soprano performed a selection of Christmas carols. Alongside the Santos Populares Dinner, this event is one of the Círculo’s most cherished traditions.
The musical program included a diverse repertoire, ranging from classics such as “O Holy Night” by Adolphe Charles Adam, “Silent Night” by Franz Gruber, and “Adeste Fideles” by John Francis Wade, to a medley of Portuguese Christmas songs, American holiday standards, and traditional Polish melodies.
“It was a moment of great artistic refinement and sensitivity,” said António Martins da Costa, President of Círculo Eça de Queiroz. “Patrycja Gabrel is an exceptional performer with a well-established career in Portugal, where she has performed on some of the most prestigious stages, including the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos.” According to the CEQ President, on this night, the soprano “delighted us with a deeply expressive interpretation, in a different style from her usual operatic repertoire, but one that immediately captivated everyone present.”
The gastronomic tradition was also a highlight, with a menu carefully selected to reflect the Christmas spirit. The dinner featured codfish with cornbread crust, stuffed turkey with braised chestnuts, and a selection of traditional desserts, including Bolo-Rei (King Cake), rabanadas (Portuguese-style French toast), and sonhos (Portuguese doughnuts). “Our dinners always follow the traditions of the season, not only musically but also gastronomically,” emphasized António Martins da Costa. “Providing experiences that unite culture and celebration is part of the Círculo’s identity.”
More than just a social gathering, the Círculo Eça de Queiroz Christmas Dinner reaffirmed the importance of its traditions and cultural mission, bringing together its members for an evening of sharing, artistry, and festive spirit.
